Hi:)
I’m from Fresno Ca zone 9b and have been working on putting in a food forest AND DIDNT start with wood chips because I was scared  they’d hurt my feet. Anyway… I really do want to mimic the forest floor more and was wondering if you all have any ideas for me.

I would seed with clover either in early spring or early fall if you have mild winters. It's drought tolerant and feels nice and doesn't grow too high and fixes nitrogen.

Good idea! Ever an issue with bees stinging you becuz it’s in the path?
We love bees. We have lavenders and sages and rosemary’s and lots and lots of bees:) But was at a park one time that had clover and got stung…. Lol maybe it’s just my own negative connection to clover.

Sand maybe? I am thinking organic products like wood chips, bark mulch and sawdust will feel good, but break down into a wet slope in very little time.

You could go with screened gravel to say 1 inch minus? It has to be screened though as crushed gravel has hard, sharp edges. Gravel tumbled by nature is rounded.

I enjoy walking barefoot on pine needles (less any 'pokey' sticks).   :-)
