Hi, I have Cherry pits in the fridge to sprout.
They’ve been in there for about a month or so.
Is it safe to plant them in the fall? I’m in the midwest. I read it’s good to put a couple of inches of sand on the top to protect from freezing.
Thanks for any advice!

I have grown pie cherries on purpose for years and sweet cherries from a tree that was in the yard when we bought the house. They both produce numerous small trees. I have grafted them and they grew up and produced. We also have been growing plums and had the same result. I get fewer trees when I actually save them and put them out the next spring, so now I just throw the pits out into the yard to see what I get.
I've sprouted apple, peach, pear, plum, apricot, and almond seed to use as grafting stock. Cherry was my only complete failure, with never a single cherry sprouting.
I live in the PNW. Most of the sweet cherries eaten in the US are grown here. There is a good chance that if you go into a wild forest here, you will find a wild sweet cherry tree. The cherries are smaller, but most of them taste quite good. I'm sure some places will sprout some seeds/pits better than others.
