Hey folks!

Hopefully this is the right forum for this question. I'm working on my homework for a permaculture course and could use some ideas!

My hypothetical client is on the California coast and wants to have a small orchard with various herbs as alley crops, as well as a structure for starting and processing.

I'm dreaming of a cross between a drying shed and a hoop house that are heated by a rocket mass heater. Is this insane? There's a 10x16' foot wooden shed available to be spruced up and used for drying, but the hoop house would need to be purchased. Would a more solid structure for the greenhouse be preferable? I have plans from a recent Permies campaign that included 3D plans for a solar dehydrator, which is what got me started on this thought experiment.

Thank you!

Hi Laura;
I'm not sure if this is all hypothetical or real property.
Anne gave you great links for lots of information.

As to your question about greenhouses.
A sturdy permanent structure is much preferable to a plastic hoop house.
Costs are quite different between them.

Permanent greenhouses must have adequate ventilation during the hot months.
A hoop house can have the plastic removed.

I would like to say that it is not insane. I've built something very much like what you are asking about in Kenai, Alaska. It's inside of a 16x32 foot high tunnel.
