As I referenced in a recent topic, poplar trees are weeds in our area. They grow very quickly, as in eight feet in one year. We have taken to cutting them down every couple of years and trying to use the wood for hugel mounds and this year, trellises. Right now there are 2-3 of them on the deck which grew in some old pots from some seeds in the air.
My question is whether it might be feasible to sell some of these trees, and if so, how much work would be involved. I know in Canada, farmers do use these trees for windcover. There used to be a program to help farmers get them at a discount. I am not sure if that program still exists. (I tried to look it up but couldn't find it.)
Do I need to claim it as business income if I just sell a few trees? And if it's not planted from seed, in a controlled environment, I can't guarantee the quality. I tend to brainstorm lots of ideas but have no idea if this sounds too out there. My basic thought is just that we have an abundance of something and would love to share with those who have a lack of something.
On a related note, ostrich ferns are kind of the same deal on this site. So many of them, growing everywhere, but for some people, they think a fern would be a luxury. What are the pros and cons of trying to sell them for a few dollars, and is it worth it?
These are potential issues for us:
a dog who is not very friendly, so it's hard to allow people to just come and pick them out themselves. Not sure if it's worth the bother Need to buy pots to plant them. (Not sure of requirement, if any.) Unsure if it's considered taxable income because I am not a farmer of any kindCould be a "time-suck" for very little return
And the benefits:
Less waste Supply someone who needs it
I would love to hear any thoughts or experience on this topic. Thanks so much in advance!
