Today was stepping into
The role of furniture dez
What a beautiful day to
Hand craft a shelf from
Scrap wood saw mill end boards
Fasteners: (drumroll please) lashing..
that’s right no metal
Just twine
Why?
Becuz

I frickin love building shelves
Bottomless fizzy bubbly
The stuff of dreams
And Kitten bathing

Energy and enthusiasm were level 9 Sunday and Monday made many cuts into many pieces of sawmill end bits.. Tuesday encountered a mental barrier , and thus a level 5.. trudging through mud to make one cut..

It’s not worth it..
It’s too much effort..
Just use dimensional lumber and f this crazy Roundwood-sawmill-end-bits-shelf..
Sigh..
I listen observe breathe and

Then decide to
Move at a sloth’s place on to the next step

Just focus on the very next step;
And nothing else!

Forget the end product
Enjoy the process
Enjoy the process
Enjoy the process
Pour Pure love into only the very next step

Be not discouraged overwhelmed or fraught with valid fears
What if it sucks
What if no one likes it
What if it breaks
What if it’s ugly
What if it doesn’t work
What if it could have been better
What if I can’t finish
What if there’s no end to the details
All valid! Okay?

The iterative process
Begs and pleads and yearns for:
Just do a thing
Then and only then
Improve it slightly
Easily speedily enjoyably
Of course
This is of course!

Okay.. Breathe..
Submit.. Breathe..
Surrender.. Breathe..
Observe.. breathe..!

Here’s The very next step:
Stand up from the shop floor.
Look up
Reach an arm just above eye level
Grasp a speed square
Sit back down

Sometimes my mind goes
twenty steps ahead and
Stifles the very next step
I was caught up in
All of the next steps all at once
A recipe for confusion
Overwhelm
Discouragement

Be encouraged
Furniture dez
Be encouraged
This IS the essence of enjoying life—

The very next step

Sigh
Thank you

We're not the only ones practicing rapid iteration.

seek out different perspectives, and search for new ways to approach big problems

falling in love with the problem, not the technology.

capturing data and teaching us about the core problems we wanted to solve

Failures are our building blocks.  Keep pressing forward, Dez.

I appreciate you.

Still going.. sometimes projects just need someone to sit and listen.. instead of trying to solve everything.. (hmm sounds like people kind of..).. today I’m installing the slats to be the shelf platforms.. bottom tier will utilize the scrap 1x4 dimensional planks that are too short for most projects.. the upper tier will utilize scrap 3/8 boards that we milled.. essentially the whole shelf is built from scraps and twine..

Beau—thank you!

I decided to gap the planks 1/4-3/8” on both tiers to let natural light in and allow debris to fall to the floor..

Iteration 1 complete for library window shelf
Materials used: sawmill end cuts and twine.

Fold-up Decking on frame design.. light enough for me to carry up the hill from classroom solo.. left some parts long for appreciating its subtle Roundwood beauty aspects.. plenty of hanging for bags coats or fire pokers..

The fire extinguisher is still very accessible.. many parts can still be cut to fit the area better.. those cuts, if any, will be iteration 1.5 or something
