I’m starting a thread about edible (especially normally cultivated) plants seen growing in somewhat unexpected places. These were growing in the strip along the drive-thru at Burgerville.

Are you sure that Burgerville isn't just planting suggestive recall in the minds of passers by that pumpkin-spice latte season is right around the corner??.... ;-)

Our pigs eat a lot of squash and pumpkin after Halloween....and the 'remains of the day' end up in the manure pile.  The following spring all variety of squash germinates and produces new blossoms and squash in that pile.  That is, until the pigs discover the new fruits.  Sometimes I can imagine them thinking "Hey...didn't I eat you last Fall?!  You taste familiar..." lol

What a great way to propagate new squash varieties! I’m not sure if these plants were planted by Burgerville management, employees, customers, or passersby, but it’s inspired me to toss more seeds in places like this.

That's very cool! Reminds me of some of the guerilla gardening I have seen and researched. Broadly, it is simply gardening on land you do not have the right to cultivate. Sprinkling some native flower seeds in flower beds, grafting fruiting tissues onto ornamental fruit trees, and stuff of the like. Perhaps this was the work of one of those individuals?

Either way, I love seeing edible plants used for their ornamental capacities as well, and frankly, I think all ornamental plants should have a practical use for the homestead. Not that beauty is not worth enough alone, but that beauty rarely occurs alone and is enhanced by practicality.

All the best,
Eric S.
