Alton Brown's Tandoor

There seem to be a bunch of different ways to make your own Tandoors on the internet and turn them into smokers, grills, and ovens. A simple google search of tandoors or cooking with clay pots will bring up a multitude of pages. The basic premise is to use a clay pot with a small wood fire or charcoal in the bottom - a cross between the masonry and earthen ovens. I haven't seen any threads yet on Permies that address Tandoor ovens so I thought I would start this one. Tandoors are cheap to make, portable, versatile, and can be made from recycled parts.

Pretty cool! One small observation tho, if you use a teflon coated pie pan like it looked like he did - when they overheat they give of toxic fumes - enough to kill a bird on the other side of the room. Might want to go with aluminum to be safe.

Yes! I posted that particular link because Alton Brown's version seems to be the most well known DIY tandoor. There are so many other options to choose from. I wasn't even aware of clay pot cooking, except as a vessel for an oven, until yesterday.
