Good evening folks! How are you? I wanna learn to drill for my own syrup whether from a maple or any other tree. I also wanna learn to create my own maple sugar since I've learned to create some from my local Native American center today. How much I need to make the sugar? Are there any other trees suitable for syrup besides maple? Please reach out to me if you need me. Take care!

Sap usually contains 3% solids/sugars and 97% water. But syrup contains only 35% water and 65% sugar

I recommend getting a reverse osmosis kit to filter out 50%-75% of the water and then boiling to get it to syrup, it is so much faster.

Hi Blake, you should check out North Park Village Nature Center, they do maple syrup making every spring. It’s up by Chi-nations garden. There it is mostly Norway maples that they tap.

I know birch can also be used for syrup, though I have not heard of it around here.
