Hey natural builders!
I recently started experimenting with cob. My landlady still had a couple of "bales" (bags) of hurd / shiv that is used as horse bedding sometimes. It's the soft inner part of the stalks, processed to roughly 1-3 cm in length.

I added it to the cob to give it some insulating qualities but it also seems to work as a fiber since it prevented most cracks.
I added 3 parts sand, 3 parts hemp, 1,5 parts clay.

Maybe this will prove helpful if someone wants to try it as well.

Is that an oven you built using the hemp cob? I have sand,  shiv, and clay and want to build an outdoor bread/ pizza oven like Kiko Denzer instructs in her book. Do you think hemp cob would work for that purpose.

Hi Lori,

yes, I built an oven with it. You can read about it here: https://permies.com/t/257726/rocket-ovens/Rocket-bread-oven-existing-BBQ

I like the Denzer book. It gave me a lot of ideas. My next plan is to built a round cob oven that will be fueled by a rocket. Probably a batch box rocket.

It depends on what you would want to use it for I guess.
I'm working with a natural builder at the moment and we use a lot of the hemp. He has a finer sifted fiber that's even better suited than the one I had.
