I've been brewing wine in small batches lately, right in the containers that I buy them from in the grocery store. This eliminates the need for most of the chemicals and equipment that are normally associated with winemaking.

I'd encourage anyone interested in getting into winemaking to try doing it this way first, as it only takes 5$ in equipment to get started and you can set a batch going in about a minute.

Good info. I've thought about making some easy wine like this. I do basically the same thing to make cider using whole foods organic Apple juice

Great article! I especially like the idea of wearing out the kids by having them shake up the wine. I guess I know what to do with the juice that you have to remove from the bottle... "Kids, come shake this bottle for five minutes and I'll give you some juice."

When I've made wine like this in the past I would pull a balloon over the top of the bottle and just poke a tiny hole in it. Really cheap air lock. As the pressure builds up in the bottle, the balloon expands to the point where the air leaks out of the hole. If the hole in the balloon is small enough you can maintain a slight pressure in the bottle. Condoms work for bottles with bigger openings, though it's a little more strange with that sitting on your counter half inflated.

I did NOT cry! It was this tiny ad that cried. The tiny ad is a crier, not me.
