Hello!

I was shopping online for glass pickling weights and came across some glass canning inserts. Are these supposed to take the place of the metal lid? From what I saw, one still needs to use the metal ring. Is this safe? Does it actually form a seal? I'm very intrigued. I haven't started canning yet but I love the idea of something reusable.  Thoughts/experiences?

Hi Laura,

I notice that you haven’t got a reply.   Can you post a picture or link to what you are asking about?  I am having a hard time visualizing your question.

Are you talking about the "Tattler" type of lid? If so I have mixed results in their use. I personally won't use them on something that I put in the pantry for long term preservation. That is the only brand I have tried so if there is another brand someone else has had god luck with I would try them to see if I get better results. https://permies.com/t/30029/Tattler-Canning-Lid-Fail-Beware

Hi Folks!

Up here in Canada (and i believe you used to have em in the USA as well) - glass lids, with a rubber sealing gasket in between, used to exist! Often called 'sealers', though I dont recall that name myself (I'm early-40s in age).
Up in Canada, especially in the 'west', we had GEM jars - a 'medium mouth' size in between reg and wide mouth, and they were INSANELY popular. We can still find them at thrift stores, and i believe the local mennonites and/or hutterites still use them.

I've just started using them, and they seem to work great!

Here's a good link with more info - https://ruraldreams.ca/canning-with-gem-jars-and-glass-lids

I'd love to find more of the reg and wide mouth glass lids (and rings) - I only have 1 of each lid, that snuck in with the gem jar lids i've been buying. Apparently those are more common on your side of the 49th parallel!
