I grew saponaria last year, but thought I needed it to grow more before harvesting it to transform it into mild soap. Did more research found out I was mistaken, the plant can be used in all stages of development. Have more seed, will grow again and try soap making at various times thru the growing season. My initial experiment was growing it, it grew fine (not a given on my north facing, tree circled, sandy soiled lot). Now to use it.

I also grew luffa, but it failed. The squash were too small to do anything with, pencil sized, by the time I took the garden down for winter.... I intend to try seeding some inside, around the beginning of April, to give me another month of growth. We'll see!

What are you trying this year?

I'll probably continue with my trials getting starch out of bracken root - maybe the time of harvest may make a difference.... I'm also hopeful that I'll be able to try growing flax and making some thread at least. I was too late (or too disorganised!) to sow the seed last year, so that is something I would like to try. I ought to buy r ranson's book before I sow the seed I suspect.

Trying to catch a swarm, and building and trying a Layens hive.  That is a completely different type of hive for me.

Year 3 of a 3-sisters garden. Goal is to document all the labor time involved. Hope to get 60 bushels/acre of corn this year.

Hatching chicks from an incubator (because my mamas will not brood.) Attempting to hybridize my old Rhode Island Reds with Speckled Sussex.

Also going to try to grow and harvest my favorite medicinal tea herb: Tulsi (holy basil.)

And then we all jump out and yell "surprise! we got you this tiny ad!"
