How we plant onion seeds

What's up! Blake wants to find out how we plant onion seeds since I'm new to planting them straight from seed. Do we begin growing them from our greenhouses or in the ground in April or sometime in the early spring? Also, how do onions mature from seed after we plant them from our greenhouses and gardens? Please reach me if you need me. Out!

I'd also like to learn how to be successful at growing onions, I've tried a couple of times to grow sprouted ones, remove the outer layers and divide the onion into multiple sections and plant each sprouted section.  I think my error is giving them too much water, but I wonder if there's something else i'm doing wrong.

Long ago reading brought to light that there are long day and short day types of onions which might be where the lack of success stems from.   This means that some like the long days of summer and other prefer the winter - this, I guess means more searching to find the type suitable for your growing conditions.   The Youtube  link above is sort of helpful.   Lately I've only grown spring onions - non-bulbing variety - and started from the root portions of bunches bought at the supermarket.  Since the market gardens around here grow onions by the acre,  there's no pressing need for a single row!

My understanding is that onions are biennial so they will produce seeds the second year. Therefore, the sprouted shoots may not bulb up and go straight to seed if they did continue to grow for you.

First, prepare loose, fertile soil and make small rows. Sow onion seeds thinly in the rows, cover them lightly with soil, and water gently. Keep the soil moist until the seeds sprout and grow into seedlings.
