I also harvest whenever I need it, regardless of first or second year, but I definitely like to let it self-propagate, too. My understanding is that the blossoms are more potent than the leaves, but it takes so many blossoms to accomplish anything, I've rarely had the time &/or patience to wait. I had a truly lovely 12sf or so patch of them growing a couple years ago, but hubby (forgetting how important they are) did a controlled burn, in that whole area - mostly to reclaim it from the invading wild blackberries, and wiped them out. I was NOT a happy woman.
