Hi there, I was curious if there is an alternative to barbed wire that you can use, when building earth bag homes. It needs to be a non conductive item so no metals. Does anyone have any suggestions or possible ideas?

Hi Rajesh,
can you tell us a bit more? Like where is the building going to be and for what use? What size?

I was once fascinated by earth bag houses but my opinion has since changed. If you're interested I'll share why.

So I would advice to use a different approach. Rammed earth is just as quick, if not quicker and has some advantages.

The Volm company sells a product (polyethylene tube netting) they call Hyper Adobe that is being used without barbed wire by several builders:

Yep also came across that video, seems like Hyper adobe is the best way to go, I am not constructing it yet, just doing the research. Thanks for the replies.

Barbed wire does two things, it prevents side to side slippage - mainly in case of significant earthquake shake force, and it adds some tension strength that resists outward pressures lower down in a domed wall. Depending on your design and location, both may be unnecessary. if you just want a bit of 'grip' between layers as you go, you could scatter just a bit of sharp gravel under each new course.

Hyperadobe Is what i was going to mention also. There are formula for what additives (if any) may be needed and in what quantities. Really verry few occasions I can think of where I would want to go with Superadobe instead.... soil quality and availability of add in product being the main two considerations.
