Hi,

I'm headed to Alaska in September. It's going to be cool and wet. I'm looking for suggestions on brands of rain gear that's light, waterproof, and fits over other clothing.
I expect to carry it in my pack with other gear, so it should be pretty light.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi Gary
I had good luck with Frogg Toggs  https://www.froggtoggs.com/?gad_campaignid=399733577
I did discover that long-term sun exposure will ruin them (sitting in the back of my Subaru)
They can also tear in the brush if you're not careful.

Although expensive, I have grown very fond of oiled leather clothing from Filson, and Outback
https://www.filson.com/collections/tin-cloth
https://www.outbacktrading.com/?campaign_id=490330332&ad_id=470989182862&utm_term=&gad_campaignid=490330332

I currently use an Outback deer hunter jacket to stay warm and dry.

Thanks, Thomas! I don't plan to go crashing through heavy brush, but do you think they'd tear just going through some light alders?

They sure could.
I would carry duct tape for field repairs.
My experiences with Toggs were 10-15 years ago.
They may have changed in that time... hopefully for the better.

Filson tin clothing is what the loggers all wore around here for years.
I can personally recommend the Outback clothing.

I currently have a rain suit hanging in my laundry room.  It is two pieces, top and pants.

To make sure they will fit over your heavy winter clothing, it might be best to try them on before buying. (with the clothing you want them to cover)

Thanks, Anne. I plan to do just that.

Thomas, I think oil cloth will be too heavy and bulky for the trip. If the weather gets THAT bad, I'll find something indoors to do! Thanks for the tip on duct tape. Have you tried any of the Gortex products?
