I've learned a few things today about something called "the alexa toolbar".
Apparently, if you have this installed, then you give one vote to every site you visit. Then alexa ranks all the sites depending on all the votes.
I've heard about it before and though "yeah, who cares." Well, based on some stuff I have learned today, I now care. Apparently they now have so many users that these numbers are starting to have some valuable meaning.
So, naturally, in my ongoing quest to be a good site steward, I would like to make the folks that visit this site regularly aware of this thing. I predict that if five people that are regulars here start using this stuff, then it will have a major impact on our alexa rank. And that will help attract more people here.
For those people that are webmasters (have their own web site) you might be interested in this free plugin:
http://www.quirk.biz/download-searchstatus It will feed numbers to alexa and to a couple of other similar things (when you turn that part on). It also has a bunch of other interesting tools in it.
For those that are not webmasters, alexa has a free toolbar:
http://www.alexa.com/ BTW: our current alexa rank is 768,255. Lower numbers are better. The rank is based on three months of accumulated "votes", so if five of us did this, we might see some change in a week or so.
Anybody fiddle with this sort of thing already?
