"Old Southern Apples" author Creighton Lee Calhoun, Jr interview

A retired U.S. Army Colonel, Creighton Lee Calhoun has spent several decades collecting extremely rare American apple cultivars. On his land (which is not far from my home) in Chatham county North Carolina, he is growing hundreds of heirloom apples. Calhoun's Nursery has become a legend among those who are trying to rescue a history that is slipping away. In his homestead he collects cuttings of old varieties, grafts them onto root stock and plants and sells the results, all in the name of preservation and propagation. He is also author of the book "Old Southern Apples" which was republished in 2011 and is one of the most comprehensive references to this genre of historic American apple varieties on the east coast, including extinct varieties. The flavor profile of some of these apples described is amazing, even cultivars that have hints of pineapple aftertones.
