I’m creating this thread to track my progress. I’m working on preserving 1,000,000 calories from local and organic foods.
I’ve created an excel spreadsheet to help me keep track of how many calories are in the things I make most often (according to a Google search. I’ll be sure to post photos of that chart periodically.
I grew up canning and freezing foods in the summer and fall to last us the winter and spring. Living close to my grandparents provided a lot of knowledge and experience that they so graciously shared with me. I hope to keep the tradition of being self sufficient alive through this badge.
Wish me luck!!

These apricots came from a tree at my grandparents house. They’re less than a mile from me and were so kind to share so many apricots with me.

Oops, almost forgot these jars. They were already put away into storage, but I managed to snap a photo
Pears from the neighbors tree of course and peaches from the U-pick farm.
This brings me to 36,725 calories total.

I realized that my calorie estimate for canned pears was slightly off. I adjusted it in my excel sheet and I’ve adjusted my total as well.

Had to do some scary climbing to reach the top of the pear tree, but it’s so worth it!

A little of everything. I made the applesauce and apple pie filling with help from a friend. We shared the fruits of our labor.

My total so far is 32,315 calories! I’m very happy with my progress thus far.
Rescued some tomatoes from the freeze. They’re still so green, but I hope that a few weeks on the countertop will help. Maybe I’ll make some tomato sauce later?
As we head into winter and the garden harvest is basically finished, I won’t be canning/freezing nearly as much. If at all.
I do have a few bags of grandmas apricots that I froze before I started tracking my calories that I hope to make some fresh jam this winter, but that might be about all I can do for a while :/
But I’ve got my other badges to work on so that’s where my focus will be.

After a Long, Tedious and Careful review. Here is my up to date excel sheet.

48,135 calories. Apparently I missed an entire picture of jars 🤦‍♀️ but it’s fixed now. Feel free to review it yourself and let me know your thoughts.
