During this period of widespread and lengthy ' big freeze' in North America, are the electric cars having issues because of the extreme cold?
I have been hearing stories about this, is it a fact?

It is a fact for some models in DEEP cold.

Not much of an issue in the American southeast right now because 1) it isn’t THAT cold (during the day at least) and 2) couldn’t drive anywhere, anyway, because the roads weren’t cleared. At least not driving far enough that a reduction in range could be an issue.

The snow removal plan around here is shut everything down for two days until it melts. Which normally works, I have never seen snow or ice stick around this long.

Range drops, but a bigger issue is that EV retain a small 12V battery to run the myriad electronics, and to drive a solenoid to connect the traction battery to the drive system when starting.
As in ICE cars the 12V battery only recharges when the car is running.

So I had the hallucinogenic experience of an EV with a charged 75 kWh main battery, but a dead 12 V battery, so it would not start.

I agree. Here's the link: http://stoves2.com
