maybe praying mantis but not like any I've ever seen.
The color is so bright...maybe unfinished.

any ideas?
I'm clearing behind the garden shed...this is bradford pear and destined to go but maybe not quite yet now.

pretty sure it’s a praying mantis egg case from last year. as in, hatched out already last year.

freshly laid mantis egg cases are much smoother on the outer edges, ‘cause it’s basically extruded foam.

thanks Greg!

That sounds more likely since the shape looks right for praying mantis except for the missing ( greyish?)outer layer.

It's so bright, seems like it would have faded by now as I thought they hatched over the summer?

I'll have to study more on their life cycle.

You know you're a permie when... you delay your job to let wildlife time to finish hatching!

hahaha!!!
it happens all the time doesn't it?
I think it is because 'observing' becomes second nature and those oddities jump out at us.

I do feel remorse if I accidently cut a branch with an egg case.

I do not feel bad cutting Bradford pear though...have been trying to cut them younger but they keep sneaking in anyplace that has grown up.

the case would be fine on a pruned branch, too! i’ve propped pruned bits with mantis cases back up in the tree a few times. they’ll hatch anyway!

It appears that my egg case belongs to a Chinese Mantis.
We have seen them here but never an egg case ...just found a second one this morning.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_mantis

The Chinese mantis is a long, slender, brown and green praying mantis. It is typically longer than other praying mantis species, reaching just over 11 cm (4.3 in), and is the largest mantis species in North America (spread throughout the Northeast United States). Its color can vary from overall green to brown with a green lateral stripe on the borders of the front wings in the brown color form. In low light, the eyes of the mantis appear black, but in daylight appear to be clear, matching the color of the head. Chinese mantids look similar to another mantis species that has been introduced to the United States

The female can produce several semi-spherical oothecae, roughly 2 cm (0.8 in) in diameter, containing up to 300 eggs.[2] The oothecae are often affixed to vegetation such as bushes and small trees.
