Hello everyone!
My partner and I are planning a move out to Western Montana within the next 3–5 years, and we are taking our time to research and ground ourselves before making the leap. We’re heading out there this summer for an initial trip to poke around, scope out candidate areas, and get a feel for the land before committing to deeper research. I'm a special education teacher and will need to be able to commute to a school system for at least the first few years.
I’d love to connect with folks who have walked a similar path or have local insight to share—particularly around:
Land, Homes, & Financing: Navigating how to structure or utilize home/land loans when purchasing land, an existing house, or financing build supplies for a homestead setup.
Growing & Botanical Differences: Transitioning to Montana’s climate coming from Zone 6 (Southern Indiana). I’m a folk herbalist and operate a small apothecary where I primarily grow herbs. While I have Master Gardener experience, shifting to Western Montana's growing season, high altitude, soil composition, and frost windows—especially for food and medicinal crops—will definitely be a learning curve!
Scouting Locations: Key microclimates, water considerations, or community pockets in W. Montana worth visiting on our summer road trip.
If you have experience with land acquisition strategies out West or adapting botanical/homesteading practices to the regional climate, I’d be immensely grateful for your supportive thoughts, tips, or lessons learned!
Looking forward to learning from this community.
