I have a real sensitive stomach and it can't take most herbs. I know tinctures you put under your tongue and hold it there. Will I get all the benefits if I put under my tongue for about 10 minutes the spit it out? I am mainly doing: Ginsing, Ginko, Valerian root, Lemon Balm.

Thank for any help

What is your current method of administration and size of dosage?

One simple method I would suggest is concentrating the liquids so that it enters your system more efficiently and in smaller doses. Essentially, you would be isolating the compounds necessary for what you desire. I do not know how much spitting the rest out would affect you; it kinda depends on the rate of absorption into your blood stream. If you do opt for concentrating the liquids and your current dosage had been working fine, you will have to reduce your new dosage proportionally.
A simple way of solving this would be to set up a system of proportions:

Current dose New dose
--------------- = -------------- Then, solve for the new dose value.
Original brew Concentrate

The key to making the compounds work is that they get into your blood stream.

Since you have trouble with taking some herbs orally, making a poultice or your own aroma therapy are alternatives to oral medication; albeit, they would be slower to act.
Here is a video from YouTube about poultices:

Maybe more benefit.

Some drugs have to be given sublingual because as soon as they hit the stomach when swallowed, the digestive process goes to work on them and they are metabolized instead of absorbed.

People have a lot of variation when it comes to their response to a chemical stimulus. If it works under the tongue for you, then by all means continue to do so.

I really don't think it is working. The B12 says sublingual then swallow. I am wanting to know if under tongue is a good way, then spitting out like mouthwash? I want to see the best way to absorb the herb without upsetting my stomach.

My tintures are made in a pint jar, half filled with the dried herb, and then the whole pint filled with 80 proof vodka. Then set in a closed cabinet in an extra room with the ceiling fan always on high since it is summer, 80 degrees in the room at all times.

Vitamin B12? That has to be absorbed in the stomach. People that have had their stomachs removed need to have monthly injections of vitamin B12 because they can't get enough from their diet any longer.

Yes I do the B12 injections 2 times a week. But I am wondering if Ginseng, Ginko, and most herbs can be absorbed in the mouth or skin? The herbs that don't need to be processed in the stomach?

Apparently, they can. When I search on "sublingual herbs" on Google Scholar, lots of studies come up, so it is an active area of research. Many of them are Chinese, since traditional Chinese medicine is herbal based.

I also learned a new acronym -- SLIT -- for Sub Lingual Immuno Therapy. It seems to be an alternative to the dermal desensitization procedures that are done to treat allergies.

But as I said before, your response may vary, so you will have to determine whether or not it is effective for you.

The benefit to tinctures is more plant compounds are dissolved into the alcohol as opposed to tea . I believe only certain plant compounds are going to be absorbed through the skin or subliguinally . Swallowing is probably the most effective . If I was nauseated by an herbal product this is what I would try :

* Taking one herb at a time to test for reactions to that specific herb

* Taking the herb with food in the stomach vs. empty

* Diluting the ticture in a large glass of water

* Taking the herb in smaller more frequent doses vs. a large dose at once

* Take it with an herb that settles the stomach such as peppermint

A good rule of thumb for tinctures is this :

Full strength tinctures should not be irritating to the mucous lining of the mouth . If a drop or two in the mouth burns or causes any topical reaction then it is too concentrated .

Hope that helps .
