Tell us what you're doing with Spore, spawn and such.

so, get jar, fill with mix of small grains and wood plugs, drill small hole in lid, stuff with poly pillow stuffing, when all is sanitary, squirt some spore from syringe into the jar which is premoistened and just watch stuff happen?

it seems a little more complicated than i was hoping but i should be able to pull it off whenever my spores get here, i wonder how sepp does it at the krametorhof?

it kinda seems that way but its really as simple as you said you moisten your wood and grains make your lids pressure cook em let em cool and nocc em up whats cool say you start 6 jars on your first run if they all come out great you can use 5 of them then take the 6th and use that 1 jar to start 10 more which is way faster than starting from spores and once you have a few health patches growing outside on your property it can be as simple as M.K. Dorje was saying just add a bit of new food for the patch each year and if you want to start a new patch take a shovel full from one of the old ones and mix it in with the new ones of course the higher spawn to sub ratio you start with the faster its going to go

So its been a few months since I posted in this thread. Have had several flushes of Pink Oyster mushrooms. Duplicating my spawn...

I've learned some and see allot of different post for how to do things. One that stands out is sterilization techniques. microwave, lime, hydrogen peroxide, pressure cooker, boiling, hot water baths. For oysters, I find a not so picky senerio. Cheapest and easiest for me has been the hydrogen peroxide. One 99 cent bottle for 25 gallon of water seems to work just fine. Also have tried the others with success.

and agreed h2o2 is wonderful stuff, very effective for so many things. i put a bit in the water i soak seeds with, and so many other uses.

i've done a bit with mushrooms, but all much simpler than whats mentioned in this thread. harvesting mushrooms from the wild, i have occasionally taken some mycellium by harvesting more of the bottom part of the mushroom. then putting holes in cardboard and sticking the very bottom of the mushroom with the bit of mycellium on it right in the holes. then got this wet, placed in a ziplock baggy and then later put it into compatible wood chips(usually soft woods, sweet woods), or straw. this has worked out great.

i felt really lucky that the logs i used for the edges of one of the garden beds had turkey tails already in it, volunteers!!!
....without any intention on my part they have been getting bigger and better each year =)

Oysters are Freakin awesome!!! I've been trading with a local pizza shop. What I cant eat or dehydrate I trade for services...and since its the pink variety...even better. Yum!

Im also just getting stated on a larger project. 6 types of mushrooms from fungi perfecti. winecaps, 2 types of oyster and maitake and shitake and chicken of the woods. There was some pine logging behind our house so one of the oysters and the chicken of the woods will get innoculated into the stumps since they should grow there. I also have a couple of maples coming down and a few poplars for the others. straw bed and/or bales for the winecaps and the other oyster. Thats actually what im about to do today is cut some poplar logs. I guess they should sit 2 weeks and I already have the spawn, keeping it in the fridge till ready. If nothing else, this first and second years could all be used for personal use untill I either go bigger or decide I dont want to. lol. we'll see.

well i havent gotten any large, super pretty fruits but often have at least one jar of blue oysters fruiting in the windowsill, last grow was 4 flushes out of a jack daniels bottle filled with colonized coffee grounds and woodchips

took the mycelium left from the grow and mixed with some brf substrate i ordered online, its colonizing now, which is good because my first flush i took a spore print (just one which is my biggest mistake) of my biggest mushroom and make spore syringes with it, and neither of the two syringes managed to make ANYTHING grow, not even contaminates

planning on forking out the money on getting a tote based fruiting chamber for the next go around to get rid of the ugly black bag and towel method ive been using so far and for less maintenance and hopefully bigger fruits

I want to bump this thread to address liquid cultures. I learned about this at the Radical Mycology Convergence last year. LC offers an easy way to store fungi cultures. You sterilize the sugar media by pressure canning and the hole in the lid with RTV silicone allows you to add and subtract culture with a syringe without exposure to contaminants. This is huge for us kitchen inoculators. I have just spent a lot of time searching the many spawn providers for cultures. Some have a few liquid cultures, the more popular ones and some have a few unusual ones as well. Some have slants or other forms of culture. They come in a syringe and cost 15-$25 each. Slants are $125 and up. Once you have it, it is easy to increase, and share, and inoculate your own grain, straw and sawdust. I want to start the following Pleurotis Blue and gold, Pulmonaria, and Eringii, Stropharia, Hericium, Chicken and Hen. These are the easy ones. Also looking for Blewit, Parasol, Hedgehog, Almond Agaricus, Morel,and Tessalatis. I have emailed a couple of the vendors to check stock, still waiting. Anybody want to trade, or suggest a reasonably priced vendor who will actually sell them?
