Michael Cox wrote:Thanks for sharing this. When I visited this area of Portugal last year I though at the time that it was crying out for help. Parched bare earth, monocrops of cork oaks or olives and overgrazed land between.
Little evidence, at least where we were, of any kind of permaculture thinking.

Michael,
There are a small number of properties with some kind of permaculture thinking: 1) Tamera, in the village Relíquias near Odemira, Vila Nova de Mil Fontes;
2) HERDADE DO FREIXO DO MEIO is a 440 hectars property in the village Foros de vale de Figueira, Montemor o Novo, in the district of Evora. See https://www.facebook.com/freixodomeio; There are many small projects in the big property. See https://www.facebook.com/diasnas.arvores.7
Kind regards.

All it takes is a few tens of thousands of dollars!

The area of the lake one is aproximately 4 hectars. The prise, i guess, was 140 thousands euros. But now Tamera does not need Seep Holzer to build lakes (water retention spaces). They have a team from Tamera people that builds water retention spaces for the neighbours.
It must be less expansive for them. They have to pay only the machinery 100 euros for one hour for two machines.
I visited a dam builded by Tamera's team in neighbours property and it was very well designed and very clean, wonderfull in all regards. They builded in the neighbours property a new dam and I visited the earthworks last august. Now it must be full with water. But I have not seen it.
kind regards.

Hello Permies

In the following two photos we can see, a stove that works together with a Scheffler mirror - solar reflector with a fixed focus, where sunlight is concentrated at a point, which is reflected again at the bottom of the pan.

I hope you enjoyed, because, next days I will share some more

Hello Permies

The next photo, just like the two previous photos were taken in the summer kitchen of the experimental field.

In this photograph we can see a solar stove that has several mouths and consists of several double-walled aluminum pots where hot oil circulates in closed circuit. The oil flow is regulated with a manual valve that opens and closes as required, allowing an exact setting of the temperature for cooking. The oil should have a minimum temperature of 150 ºC, thus making it possible to fry, to bake and to cook in the oven.

and...

"The stacking wooden boxes on the left are for steaming food, and the big brown box has 'hot pockets' which pans fit into, surrounded by hot oil." - Information taken from the Burra Maluca post.

Hello Permies

Continuing sharing of some photographs taken by me and friends on August 2013, today's sharing is about the auditorium of the Research Center for Peace of Tamera.

The walls of the auditorium of the Research Center for Peace of Tamera are 8 meters high and has space for 400 people, is the largest building built with straw bales and earth in the Iberian Península. The green roof and the earthy exterior walls fuse harmoniously with the landscape.
The auditorium is a building with a wooden structure and stacks of straw bales which were later towed on both sides with earth, that on the outer side, the earth was mixed with lime to protect it from the rain.

Hello Permies

I share a photo of a biogas biodigester located in the solar village in Tamera.
In Tamera they sought to supplement insufficient solar radiation in the winter months with the construction of the biogas biodigester.
Biogas can be generated from any form of biomass through anaerobic processes (the facility is free of oxygen).
During the course of the year, the most diverse forms of biomass are produced in Tamera: kitchen wastes, pruning of trees and shrubs, horse manure and human manure.
The purpose of the installation is to take advantage of this energy potential to obtain clean energy.
This Nepalese biogas facility consists of an underground fermentation pit covered by a dome in masonry or concrete.
Here, the organic material is fermented through microbes, forming methane gas, which rises and accumulates in the dome and from there is led to a deposit or is channeled directly into the kitchen.
The fermented material passes to an evaporation tank, is dry and can be used as fertilizer in the garden.
