Congrats on the one million mark.

Hey Paul,

I've heard you on your podcast a couple times say to put links on their Facebook walls.  I'm pretty sure that because Facebook has a login wall, the Google bots that mine sites for links can't data mine inside Facebook. So putting a link on a wall may drive specific traffic to you that actually see the link, but I don't think it will do a darn thing to improve your SEO.  I hope this helps.

Google has confessed that they do use that info some.

It's better than nothing!  And the direct traffic is a help.

So even though the site is much bigger, alexa thinks it is smaller.  interesting.

I think "size" is traffic.

If I make 500,000 web pages, but the site gets 10 people per month, that's a small site.

If I make 1 web page, the site gets a million people per month, that's a big site.

I have no interest in debating.
Looking at the trend, the number of visitors has doubled in the last 9 months, and page views is off the chart.  At what point does server bandwidth become an issue?

Alexia is a rating site putting websites in order from most visited to least the rating means that worldwide there are about 50k sites that eat up more of peoples free time than permies.com

not bad for a special interest site Paul

It was a big issue a year ago when my crappy host shut permies down for getting too much traffic in one day.

My current host, evolutionhosting.com is what I've been using for ten years for my freaky big site:  javaranch.com.  JavaRanch gets about 3.6 million visits and 26 million pageviews per month, so evolution can easily handle the load.

current pace:

permies:  12,000 visits and 110,000 pageviews per day
richsoil: 3,000 visits and 7,000 pageviews per day
youtube: 4,000 visits and 6,000 views per day
podcasts:  crappy metrics.  guessing 800 regulars and 400 noobs per month, so 1200 per month which is about 40 visits per day.

year end stats if we coast:

permies:  3.1 million visits
richsoil: 1.0 million visits
youtube: 1.5 million visits
podcasts:  ~0.02 million visits

total: 5.6 million visits

hard work, lots of new content and some good luck:

permies:  4.0 million visits
richsoil: 1.5 million visits
youtube: 2.0 million visits
podcasts:  0.1 million visits

total: 7.6 million visits

My previous host for permies shut us down one day for getting too much traffic.  They didn't email me and say "hey, today's traffic is about 9% higher than yesterday and high enough that we think we should charge you more."  Nope.  Just everything shut down.  I had to go through their super slow motion "customer support" which eventually let me in the loop "oh yeah, we turned it off because of too much traffic."  Apparently, the didn't compare my traffic to my previous days - they compared my traffic to other sites and saw a difference.

My current host is the same as my freaky big site (javaranch).  Their response time for anything is usually under a minute.  And when we have had attacks, they were fixing it before we ever noticed.  With the recent attack on permies, they put a block on something that the spammers were using, thus causing a 1% inconvenience rather than bringing the whole site down.  Then when we got something else in place, they removed the block in seconds.

These guys are first class.

I think a lot of it is, unfortunately, gonna be all the spammers we've been nailed with recently.  So it is sort of an empty win.

Yeah, I did hear 6000 a day in the podcast, but now that the numbers of them are being whittled down you should see more accurate results.

I still think the interest and increase in traffic will be on the upside, month to month.

it is now december the 5th and permies.com has already passed 3 million for 2011. Richsoil has over a million for 2011. My youtube channel has almost 2 million (1,971,518 ) for 2011. So, right now, my permaculture empire has touched more than 6 million people in 2011. I suppose it is possible to reach 7 million by Dec 31.

I just figured out that for november, my permaculture empire reached 820,000 people. We have a chance of hitting 1 million people for december, bringing the 2011 total to 7 million.
