Note that amazon.com stuff has to end with "-20" and amazon.co.uk stuff has to end with "-21".

Because posting http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN/0865716668/rs12-20 doesn't look nearly as cool as posting The Permaculture Handbook, we generally prefer the latter, descriptive hyperlink.

To create a hyperlink, click this button in your reply toolbar:



When you do so (and if no text is highlighted) a dialogue box pops up. There will be two steps.
1 - enter the URL - in this case http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN/0865716668/rs12-20, click OK
2 - enter the title or text - in this case The Permaculture Handbook, click OK

Voila: The Permaculture Handbook.

If you already typed your text, highlight the text, click the URL button, and you'll have the "[url]" bracket thingies at each end of the highlighted text. In the first one, insert a "=" immediately following the "url" followed by the website - no spaces. That works too!

How does the "through the link" part work? if I click on an amazon link at permies and then from there search for an item I want to buy, will Paul get a kickback too? I buy stuff from amazon every now and then and it would be cool if you could get a kickback from anything I buy even if its not linked at permies, is that possible?

Coincidentally when I logged into amazon today I was offered to participate in AmazonSmile. Apparently if I join in Amazon donates 0.5% of what I spend to a charity that I choose. Does Paul have a charity? or would there be a charity that you would endorse for this? Do you know if this interferes in any way with the affiliate links?

Yup! Exactly! Just enter amazon via one of paul's affiliate links here on permies (usually any of the book summary threads have them) and then search for whatever you want and paul will get a kickback.

Nah, paul doesn't have a charity.

Im not seeing the isbn number. I'm using app on cell phone. Could this be why? Heres the link

If you click more product details you will see a section that contains an ASIN number. For this product it is B00E5MXGKK.

My understanding is that you can use that instead of an ISBN.

And you replace the ASIN in the link to be the product number. In the case of books, it is the ISBN. For instance, here is an affiliate link for the Roundwood Timber Framing book:

FWIW, (and it bears repeating), if you bookmark a permies page that has an affiliate link, and you use that link to open Amazon to do your shopping, even if it's other things, and you check out within 15 minutes or so, permies will get a kickback! HOORAH!!
