I use white oak for fire wood, furniture, casks (barrels), basketry, smoking meats and veggies, we roast the acorns for us and some gets made into flour for bannik (fry bread), and I have enough white oaks that the deer, hogs and goats get their fill of acorns too. Next year we will get into mushroom production at which time some of the white oaks will be used for growing mushrooms.

I also have a multitude of hickory trees that get used for tool handles, basketry, smoking wood, Bows, and enough hickory nuts to feed all the critters that like them too.

My husband uses white oak for wooden pitch forks and bucket hoops and red oak for shake shingles. We use black oak and some white and red for shiitake logs and any of them for firewood. Our friend uses white oak for baskets and hickory and oak for all of his chairs....and our son brought in his bandsaw and milled 1000board feet of white oak for a friend's deck. ..and white oak bent wood back scratchers!

we have quite a few hickory also. i have lots of black cherry i thought would make good gunstocks and such along with smoking foods. thanks for the input guys. i need to become a better woodworker as my medium of choice is metal for now. We need to get all the Ozark/arkansas folks together for a permies seed swap or something fun.

It's hard to describe in words how much pigs love acorns!

One inch rough sawn green white oak planks are often quoted as being the best decking material for slate roofs. I am planning on building up in Western Montana, and I am not feeling excited at the prospect of trying to track some down out there. Good luck!

That is a really big piece of pie for such a tiny ad:
