PEP1: Small Tool Care (locked - outdated)

Beginning list to start the conversation on what needs to be on this list-

sharpen 5 knives to razor sharpness using only hand tools
sharpen 3 knives using 3 different sharpening techniques
successfully sharpen a serrated blade edge 3 times
Clean a cast iron skillet with no water or soap
Clean a cast iron skillet in less than 15 seconds without water or soap
Maintain a tool with a wooden handle by applying linseed oil
sharpen a chainsaw 3 times
sharpen the rakers on a chainsaw
replace a bowsaw blade
sharpen a tool with an angle grinder
Sharpen a curved blade tool (like a drawknife) effectively by hand
Sharpen a hatchet effectively by hand
sharpen a tool with a bench grinder
make your own hand planer
build your own level, at least 6 inches long
replace a handle to a damaged tool with a one you have made yourself
successfully maintain an oil or water sharpening stone
make a hand saw
rework the blade to a nicked tool, and repair it to shaving sharpness



I'm assuming we'll move the cast iron stuff, but I don't think we have a kitchen category yet so I'll keep it here for now.

cook five meals with a cast iron pan where nothing sticks to the pan
clean a cast iron pan five times where stuff got ridiculously stuck to it
oil three wooden cutting boards, three spoons and three kitchen tool handles
thoroughly and accurately sharpen five chainsaw chains - including he rakers
sharpen five bow saw blades
sharpen three axes
sharpen two hatchets
sharpen two drawknives
replace the handle on two tools



green belt:

polish 3 hammer faces
custom grind a hammer face
sharpen 3 spade bits, 3 twist bits and 3 auger bits
use the "scary sharp" system to sharpen 3 plane blades
Set up a scythe
Peen a scythe blade to proper sharpness

refurbish a pneumatic nail gun

Properly calculate the amount of oil needed for several different container sizes to achieve the proper oil/gas ratio for 2-cycle engines. (1:50, 1:40, and 1:24)
Properly install and tension a chainsaw chain.
Properly clean chainsaw air filter, describe when to replace.
Demonstrate how to inspect chainsaw fuel filter. Describe when to replace and demonstrate how.
Demonstrate how to clean and check the gap on a chainsaw spark plug.
Demonstrate how to check a chainsaw spark plug for spark.
Demonstrate how to adjust the chainsaw oiler screw, check to see if the oiler works, and describe the optimal flow rate.
Properly disassemble, clean, lubricate, and reassemble a chainsaw.
Demonstrate at least one way to clear a flooded chainsaw.

Green belt:

Know the difference between different types of chainsaw chain (full skip, semi-skip, safety, chisel tip, semi-chisel, ripper). Describe the strengths and weaknesses of each and some recommended uses.
Check chainsaw chain for excessive stretching. Describe when to replace.
Check chainsaw bar for uneven wear. Demonstrate how to refurbish chainsaw bar and describe when to replace.
Check chain sprocket for wear. Describe when to replace.
Demonstrate how to re-install a thrown chain.
Demonstrate how to re-attach a broken pull cord.
Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot a chainsaw. (5 times, with 5 different problems).
Demonstrate how to purge a chainsaw for long term storage.

Brown belt:

Make three properly sized chainsaw chains from a roll of bulk chain. (If you have the tools to do this.)
Demonstrate using a repair manual to perform an unusual chainsaw repair.
Change the tip on a replaceable-tip bar

In the dropbox folder link below you will find a presentation taken from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group's chainsaw operations course. The subject is chainsaw maintenance. Doesn't go into a whole lot of detail because it's meant to be used in a classroom setting rather than as a stand-alone presentation, but it's somewhere to get going from if you're starting at square 1.
