hallucinogenic mushrooms seem to be helping me with my depression, i was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and PTSD when i was 13 years old. i am now 23 and still struggle with depression even though i am very happy with my life. my friend and i did some mushrooms and my mood greatly improved for the next week. i have started this week using them in my eggs in the morning about every other day. it has given me motivation and just a general since of well being. has anyone heard of this as food as medicine for depression?

Hey Trinda,

I'm really sorry to hear about your chronic depression. It's great if you are finding some relief.

I obviously don't know your case, though I would just say be very careful. Hallucinogens are not primarily mood enhancers, they are very potent that change the makeup of your nervous system and literally open doors of perception that your physical and energetic nervous system might not be prepared for. Especially if used chronically over time and at breakfast! Every other day sounds like a lot, and hallucinogens especially need to be treated with respect.

I hope somebody more experienced can point you in the right direction. My instinct says if its working for you, so be it, but set yourself a schedule to wean yourself off it as well so that you can use the boost of motivation to build patterns of activity and feeling in your life that will slowly run as patterns in their own right, without needing the chemical boost, that has other types of side effects.

Good luck!

Here are two good articles about this subject that I've read recently.....maybe you could participate in a study somewhere...I'm sure dose is key to long term effects.

Trinda what type of dose are you taking every other day? I have heard of people taking small amounts daily for various reasons, never heard of it being a big problem. If you trip every day or ever more than once a week it will be not so good for the body and psyche.

"Tolerance to psilocybin is quickly acquired if trips are taken more often than once a week. If one does acquire tolerance, it can be gone around by either upping the dose or by laying off for a couple of weeks to allow your body to recover its equilibrium. We recommend the latter course even though the toxicity off psilocybin is so low that raising the dose is a valid alternate course." I can't find the link now, but I read a research paper that said a single dose had permanent lifelong improvements in mood. Repeated use did not.

The other part of mood is gut health and your microbiological balance. Probiotics, cultured and fermented foods, slow food all help to rebalance your gut and stabilize mood.
