Cedar is my choice for anything outdoors but we have plenty. If all you have is pine, then you use pine but you'll want to preserve it if you want it to last. On the other hand how hard is it to just make another?

Hemlock and Larch are also good for outdoor use.....
 
keep an eye out for scorpions and black widows. But the tiny ads are safe.
