Halifax, Nova Scotia is facing a critical shortage of housing and skyrocketing prices. So they threw out a bunch of zoning and minimum size restrictions to allow the construction of smaller dwellings, including tiny houses. I wonder if this might set a trend for other large metro areas.

That is fantastic, I guess those laws had a reason for their existence.
It may hve been to eliminate slums and caravans, but recognising a need is a great effort.

Many minimum dwelling size restrictions are to keep less affluent people from building in a neighborhood. Minimum room size restrictions are for generally reasonable purposes, to ensure safe and not cramped accommodations, and to protect resale values of houses. My town requires a minimum lot size of two acres outside of settlements, which is reasonable to avoid crowding wells and septic systems. There is no public water or sewer in the town. There is no minimum building size other than the net effect of state building code room dimensions.
