Hello, I have been looking all over trying to find some My Jewel Scion wood for grafting in spring of 2016. These apples are apparently pretty hard to find and are supposed to have a banana like taste to them. If anyone happens to have any of these kind of apple trees or knows anyone who does I was wondering if you could please send me a few Scion cuttings. Of course I would send some money to cover the shipping. Or if someone knows of an orchard or a website that sells Scion wood and has this variety.
Secondly, if anyone knows of any other good / strange varieties of apples that have a different taste please let me know.
Thanks for your help
USDA ARS at the Geneva NY site has a Jewel and a Red Jewel in its catalog. Click on "apple catalog" at this site. (A direct link will go stale after a year).
I don't have My Jewel, but as to other unusual tasting apples: I have an apple from ARS Geneva that is called KAZ 96-07-07-it has a hazelnut/banana flavor and I have Ard Cairn Russet-it has a banana flavor. I have ordered a scion from Fedco Trees called Briggs Auburn-it is supposed to have a blackberry/banana flavor. It is not listed in their catalog or their website. You have to write it in the notes section of the order form. If you are interested in the 2 that I have let me know. My email is--zorgon_62@live.com
I have this apple. However, my trees are quite small, have not borne fruit yet. I could possibly still give you a piece of scionwood. I'm not sure if it is too late to try grafting. Where are you located?
I obtained the scionwood from Nick Botner, however that was a few years ago and Nick Botner was just retiring and selling his famed scionwood orchard. The fruit has also been described as having a pear-like flavor. It is supposedly more banana-like than Winter Banana, which apparently doesn't have that much of a noticeable banana flavor.
Thank you for replying. If your tree is too small to cut anything off then please don't do that. I don't want to damage your tree by cutting anything off. I am located in New Jersey and have not started grafting anything yet. I should be able to start within the next few weeks. If you do have enough growth on your tree that would be great but please don't do it if you don't think there is enough. If you could please email me at kmkorsz@gmail.com.
