Hi all you fellow permies! We at ABC acres have been working on an 80 acre piece of property in the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana for the past few years. Recently, we have begun to film some videos of what we have been up to. We will be sharing them here for those that find them of interest, and hope people get some ideas, as well as us receiving insight through the collective intelligence of people on these forums. Happy growing to you this spring season, and blessings. Our video for this week is our process of making and filling our chinampa bed demonstration in our crater garden.

Another week, another video from ABC acres...hmm, I see a pattern developing! This week I share a technique for propagating autumn olive from branch cuttings, but it could be applied to many other shrubs as well. In addition, I follow-up on previous videos, and bring together some of the methods we have been trying out here at ABC acres to create a place of abundance. I also get a little silly...I think it was the heat!

This video, while maybe not the "sexiest" of permaculture topics out there, is nevertheless a key component to having a successful permaculture property. Monitoring your permaculture properties while they are establishing will set your system up for success, and ensure that after some years of interactive stewardship, one will be rewarded with a more relaxed, harvesting-management system. Here I give a practical example of monitoring sectors that can be ever-changing, especially when dealing with neighbors!

I subscribed and watched nearly all your vids. I found 2 chinampa vids but nothing that would be a follow up with stuff growing.

You guys are gonna have a heck of a property in a few years.  Great work overall. Envious!

The chinampas are still in process, and not a priority project at this point in the season. We will follow-up on them next season with what we have planted and growing on them. Thanks for watching and for your interest in what we are doing!

Foraging the wild edibles is a great topic. There is so much that nature can provide that gets overlooked. A lot like huckleberries are things that really aren't even commercially available in any real way. So you can get produce that you can't get in stores.

John, yes! I have found few flavors finer than wild mountain huckleberries fresh off the bush!

Devin, right you are. There is such rich, diverse flavors offered up by nature that we can enjoy. What is offered in stores is much more about what ships and keeps well than what is most nutritious or flavorful. Growing our own or sourcing from local growers, and wildcrafting what is in the wild is how we can truly get the good stuff!

Happy Wednesday! To celebrate we have another video to share. This week's video is on a method for controlling thistle from going to seed, and a few ideas for what to do with the useful plants. I also show a useful technique for quickly clearing any area of vegetation I learned while living in West Africa, and could be of use to those not wanting to use machinery, but who do not have a scythe.

Thanks John! It has us thinking of scaling this operation up next season to create nursery stock for our own future planting projects, as we as for sales to the local community. I weeded to clean it up a bit for filming, which was the first time since we healed in the trees in early June, and it only took about 3 minutes to do so. It seems to have the potential to be an incredibly time-efficient and cost-effective way for nursery stock propagation.
