moving to a new host this morning

99.9% of all content has been moved to a new host.

DNS caching issues are being mitigated.

At some point, we will get a copy of the latest database and move it over.  New posts after we get the copy will be lost. 

In theory, the full process of copying and being up and running on the new host should be less than an hour.

It will probably be sometime this morning.  Around 10am pacific time.  But it might not be until this afternoon or evening.

It sounds like we will make the move tomorrow (monday) morning because of DNS propogation stuff.

Monday morning 10am mountain time the site will go into maintenance mode.  We should be back in business in less than 30 minutes.

I've noticed several posts being truncated.  don't know if that's on your end or mine.

also noticing some trouble with diacritical marks and a few other characters.

Saw the diacritical marks at about 7pm on some posts but now they are gone.

also, the strange word in my signature should read "hyva" with a trema over the "a", not "hyvä".

as for the truncation, https://permies.com/permaculture-forums/5679_0/permaculture/fruit-tree-recommendations shows one of mine, though it won't be obvious that I didn't just stop typing mid-thought.  I've fixed the rest of them, including this one, using the "modify" link multiple times.

I don't think the BBC tag buttons are working.  neither is the "insert quote" option.

First, I would like to thank David Rizzi and Paul Little for helping with the move.  David did nearly all of the work - moving the database and all of the files, and Paul Little manages the new host and provided rock solid guidance.  Paul Little has been hosting my big site (javaranch.com) for years with his outfit evolutionhosting.com

For the character issues, I'm guessing that there is something about how the database is configured that might change that.

As for the buttons no longer working when writing a post ....  well that is a stumper.  Anyone have any ideas what might have happened there?

In an effort to troubleshoot this issue, I think the question to be defined is. "What has changed?" now that server B is hosting your site, huge changes in the back-end infrastructure could have changed, including the OS that is on the machine hosting this site (though I wouldn't be concerned about changes that deep yet).

Lets define some of the differences:

-Do you still have access to server A (where this used to be hosted)?

-is this a PHPBB board? is there a version difference between server A and server B?

-you mentioned Java-Script issues... is Java the same version? be careful... Java on Linux machines may not even be of the same manufacture. There are multiple generic versions of Java that it could be running (maybe even at the same time, or it could be Sun Java ... it also could be a configuration in your PHPBB setup (or whatever Forums software you are using) that points to Java... 

Yes - I still have access to the old server.

This is a modified SMF board - written in PHP. There were no changes between the two versions during the move, although the directory structure was changed slightly:  we do have to declare the exact physical directory for a lot of stuff in the database - so when we moved, time was spent going through the configurations making that change.  It is possible that one of those is currently wrong.

This site uses no Java.  Yet. 

Christophe and Andrew over at JavaRanch gave me a huge clue and with the help of David Rizzi on the phone I was able to fix the buttons. 

Paul Little says he has a solution for the funny characters and cut off posts and we will probably need to bring the system down for a little while to fix that.

Is the post chop / crazy character thing fixed?  Are we good now?

Paul Little did something and it seems like all is now fixed.  And we didn't even have to bring the forums down!

my signature is correct now.  that seems like a good sign.

Looks fine now.

Considering this was a full transfer you did an amazing job having only a few minor glitches.  You have a great crew working this site.  Kudos to all.

And it would have taken me twenty times longer to do it solo.  Thanks to getting help, I have more time to put out more videos.
