I am interested in haspcap berries. As they are a sort of lonicera, they should grow well here (cool temperate Australia- yes we get frosts!). However, I read that there are some named cultivars around. Are the cultivars really all that better? Of course I cannot find them in Australia! I know usually cultivars are propagated vegetatively, but what about if I tried seeds from these cultivars? Does someone grow these berries at all?

Hi,

Have a look at this site. http://www.fruit.usask.ca/haskap.html. The University of Saskatchewan has been doing research on these for a long time. They are very popular up here...
They are very hardy (-40C) and fruit really early... Not sure how they will do in warmer clims. Not sure sure if they require a hard frost or not to do well...

We are in the mountains. That means in winter nights it gets down to approx. -5C (five under freezing). Would that be enough? It is great that they are early... would fill in the gap in spring.

The Russian varieties are right out.

You will probably have some success with the later-blooming Japanese varieties.

Can I grow these varieties from seed? Importing plants to Australia is a major untertaking which is expensive!

I have planted about 12 haskap shrubs. They are still small so I only had a few fruit this year, so I am not expert yet. We are located in Quebec Canada, zone 4a.

Since you cannot import the plants, I would highly recommend that you plant the seeds. You have nothing to lose. I am sure that they will taste very fine. They do like cold climates, so you'll have to see if you have enough cold in your winters for them to thrive.

Keep us all posted so that we can learn from your experience.

I planted 20 or so of them from little cuttings this year, so they wont be fruiting much any time soon. I don't have any seeds for you, but my neighbors might. If you don't find someone else, perhaps I can get some from the berries in the coming spring. Please remind me in April.
