permaculture picture book?

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I've been thinking about a possible communication tool to get the message out about permaculture to farmers in various parts of the world, some of whom are illiterate.

Just wondering what the forum thinks about a book that is entirely visual, using illustrations and photos, and explains the permaculture principles? would love your feedback.

I would love that, the more the better in my view.  I think one can only go so far with pure academia anyway with permaculture.  I learn the most by seeing systems and guilds in action.  I look at something and go it won't work where I am but if I add this, remove that, etc. I could make it work and then begin combining multiple methods used by others.  To me this is what permaculture is really all about, crowdsourcing and you know what they say about a picuture being worth a thousand words right?

I'm Scottish and live in France and although my French is good now I've relied on the thousands of photos I've taken here to show people what I'm talking about.

It has been a great way to spread the word about what using permaculture can do and a good way to remind myself too.

Are you thinking of undertaking a project yourself Anna-Monique ?

Funny you should ask. i was going to ask for contributions from dedicated designers to tackle one concept. there are so many creative people who practise permaculture. i love the idea of collaborations. we could disseminate it by putting a link to a free pdf in addition to having some printed copies sent to specific regions. i think your photos could be the beginning...

And here I thought it was just me taking over 1000 photos per year on the changes of permaculture on the property!!! 

I guess a Permaculture Visual Dictionary is more appropriate. I'm going to collect names, are you interested?

You could take the same material and make a shorter version for children/youth... or the other way around, and build out to ESL.  Let me know when you get farther along and I'd contribute some line drawing rendering for specific topics where you have gaps.

I agree and thanks! I have to sort out a list of topics that need to be covered, maybe looking at some indexes out there.

In my opinion, I think you should use colorful illustrations, rather than photographs.  I have found that lots of permaculture photographs are a confusing sea of a myriad of green leaves, which is difficult to disect and tell what is what.  Illustrations can be beautiful and fix all that.

Very good point about the illustrations versus photos. Maybe there is an illustrator out there who is also really into permaculture???

what a great idea, using pictures and universal symbols to teach permaculture..it might be a real big job..but I would love to see it proceed

There is a book called "Getting Started in Permaculture" That is very very highly illustrated.  It might help you as research material, and it is also a good book for projects you might not of thought of.
