This is probably a topic similar to cats, but with its own twist. The community garden in my town is in the middle of bunny country. So 1) a poor site for community garden 2) what to do for now?
I learned about all this the day I transplanted corn, so had to do *something* before walking away. I put blackberry prunings all around my plot. BUT, you know that story about briar rabbit 'oh Don't throw me in the briar patch! anything but that!' So although the blackberry branches worked for last night, I'll need something more until those corn get bigger. Rabbits aren't too scared of blackberry I think.
If you were in the country, on a farm ... it seems there are two solutions:
1) rabbit: aren't they supposed to be pretty good eatin?
2) rabbit: Won't that cut back on your dog food bill?
As for something urban ... I'm racking my brain ... If they were really ugly like rats, people would probably be okay if you used traps. But for cute bunnies, folks might get awful sore with you.
... I wonder if you could borrow a dog that thought rabbits were super yummy and walk the dog at 5am - near the garden?
The problem I've had with doggies vs. urban bunnies is that it gave my dog tapeworms...yuck.
We were visiting my father in law in the Chicago 'burbs and I let my German Shepherd out for his final duty one night and he came back with a dead bunny in his mouth. I guess my father in law was happy he got the critter, but then he got the tapeworms. Cleared up just fine with some meds but gross just the same!
Have you tried spreading hair clippings around? I have tried this with some success. My hair stylist was all too happy to give me a garbage bag of hair! Our yard used to have a yearly nest of bunnies that my dog would invariably get no matter how vigilantly I thought I was protecting them.
Not sure if it was the hair spread around the lawn (cut up of course) or the owls... but no more bunny nests!
