A podcast review of the movie is here.

The premise is that many diseases can be resolved by food choices.   And this has been discussed several times at the forums.  A good start is my thread on eliminating medication with polyculture; and the thread about beating cancer

We talk about raw food; local food; the missoula urban demonstration project; composting toilets; outhouse; urine diversion; women peeing outdoors; hugelkultur; rain barrels; greywater; commercial compost; art ludwig; pee powered cars; jean pain technique; poop beasts.

This is a really good documentary.  I watched it on Netflix as well.  In our household, my husband had been plagued most of his life by ADHD.  Couldn't focus, was on anti-anxiety medication, taking adderall 3 times a day.  We stopped eating gluten and casein, started taking acai berry, omega three's, b-complex and a vegan multivitamin and he is like a different person.  He doesn't even really take the adderall anymore and his anxiety is what I would consider normal.  It took about a week for him to basically detox before life changed for him.
He had been on adderall for 13 years with no real improvement, in 7 days with a dietary change he now remembers conversations we had, he has greater emotional control.  Modern medicine, as it is practiced, cannot really help us.

I'm a doctor.

Any doctor worth his/her salt will tell you that drugs are bad for you.  Drugs have side effects.  Their workings are incompletely understood.  Their interaction with other drugs are incompletely understood and combinations of two drugs are often tested for interactions but MANY people are on more than two drugs  - in facts TONS of americans are on more then 10 drugs.  With that many chemicals in your body at one time, all bets are off on what the hell is really going on inside your body.

Your average middle aged patient in a clinic will be one or two drugs for high blood pressure, a drug for high cholesterol, a drug for acid reflux, some allergy medicine, one or two diabetic medicines, possibly a thyroid medication, some antidepressant, and an aspirin.  This is in my mind - lunacy.

We all know that 90+% of all adult medical problems are the result of lifestyle.  Translation - you did it to yourself.  You ate a terrible diet.  You don't exercise.  You smoked.  You drank.  You used drugs.  You had unprotected sex with too many people.  You let yourself become twice or three times the weight your frame was designed for.

These people come to me and they want a quick fix.  They want to know what pill I can offer that will fix what bothers them.  I tell them that what they need is not more meds but less meds.  But the problem is that in order to do that, patients have to be willing to DRAMATICALLY change their lifestyle.  And they have to be willing to wait.  You're not going to undo 50 years of abusing your body in a week of good clean living.  It's going to take a while.

Also, we are genetically wired to want to eat the things that in nature are scarce - sugar, salt, and fat.  Thousands of years ago when calories were scarce, being attracted to these things offered a survival benefit.  But now if you go look at all our processed foods, they are LOADED with salt, sugar, and fat.  Because the food industry knows that this is what tastes good to us.  It's very hard to many people to give up that kind of food.

But I'm glad that people are making films like this and educating people.  Maybe it will motivate some people to change.  If people stopped smoking, drinking, doing drugs, and started eating lots of grains, fruits, and veggies and exercising everyday,  they'd stop being obese, diabetic, asthmatic, hypertensive, hyperlipidemic, vasculopathic, depressed medical disasters.
