New Feature!

Now when you goto any of the podcasts on www.richsoil.com/permaculture you will see related podcasts at the bottom!

Working on a feature that will allow us to shorten up the URL's. This is better for SEO but we must be careful when doing this because it will change the links to all podcasts. Don't worry this will be heavily tested before implemented. The way we do this is using URL redirects. So we can tell the website that if anybody comes to the site using the old URL redirect them to the correct URL.

Like I said we are working on this but it will not be slowly implemented.

1) send me email for a good time tomorrow.

2) i'm looking at it - yeah, let's talk about it tomorrow. one question I have: would people that consume podcasts do a google search for "rocket mass heater podcast"?

3) it sounds like safe mode will be still on. We'll make the best of it.

4) excellent. I will play with it soon!

401: related podcasts - that's excellent! That is sure to help the SEO!

402: shorter URL's would be great. I think some people really struggle with those.

403: any chance of getting a grip on the titles? They seem way, way, way too long.

I have set up a sandbox site! This is is the testing grounds for the new site. Here we can experiment with anything and not break the main website.

If anybody wants to get a look at what we are tying out go to permies.independentjo.com.

Remember that nothing on here is guaranteed to be implemented. It is simply a playground for testing new features.

1. Okay sent it.

2. Not really. The only people who would search that would be a. people who know about rocket mass heaters or b. people who have listened to your or read your articles. Most people will be searching for stove, heater, water heater, etc etc. We want to target those people to learn about a better way (ie. Rock Mass Heaters). I would love to look at the google keyword rankings. Their keyword tool has been down all day! It's killing me. They are "upgrading" to a new version of it.

3. That's okay. Everything that required safemode so far are things that he has already implemented into the server... which is GREAT!

4. I will create a user login for you on the sandbox so that you can play with it there if you like. This way nothing breaks. Once you get a handle on how it works then use the live site?

401 - I have even more plans similar to this should do a lot of good. It is especially nice for the listeners.

402 - I tread carefully with this subject. You want to make sure everything is done correctly the first time. We will get it done though.

403 - When we do the URL changes we will do the title changes as well. All of this has to be done while also ensuring maximum SEO while keeping it relative.

404 - Time for some mead.

PowerPress has been installed and the archive.org player has been removed.

For the Viewers:

This just means that the website will load a bit faster and the podcast player looks a little different.

For the Administrators:

What does this mean for those creating the podcast posts? All this means is that you no longer need to enter any text into the content for the player. PowerPress takes care of this for you. Below the content area where you enter the podcast description you will see a new "box" called "Podcast Episode (default)". This is where you enter the .mp3 link. In the "Media URL" field is where the link to the .mp3 goes.

For example: http://www.archive.org/download/WheatonPermaculture107FluorescentLighting/wheaton-permaculture-107-fluorescent-lighting.mp3.

Once you have the url in click verify.

It is also a good idea to enter the iTunes meta data as well. This is how iTunes will display information about the podcast as well as how it crawls for search data. If you leave the fields blank it will just use the Title and content you already have entered for the podcast.

Once you are done entering the data and update the post powerpress will automatically add the player to the top of the post as well as the length, file size and download info.

It sounds like everything is moving forward smoothly.

Suzy Bean says she will attempt to put up a new podcast today.

It sounds like Mr. Wallingford will create a new podcast at itunes that will be able to list hundreds of podcasts. Once we have that set up, itunes consumers will need to switch to that.

Hi Josiah, first of all, thanks for all your help!

Now, I am working on putting up podcast 108. I put the .mp3 link in the media url space and clicked verify. It gave me this message:

"Warning, Media URL http://www.archive.org/download/WheatonPermaculture109ListenerQuestionsAndStartingFromScratch/wheaton-permaculture-108-listener-questions-and-starting-from-scratch.mp3: Sample Rate 48Khz may cause playback issues, we recommend 22Khz or 44Khz for maximum player compatibility. [Help]"

When I click [Help], it says this:

"Blubrry PowerPress checks that your mp3 media is using either 22Khz or 44Khz sample rate for maximum player compatibility.

Web (Flash) based media players require the sample rate be either 22Khz or 44Khz in order to playback the media correctly. When your mp3 is not set to the correct sample rate, playback may become accelerated, giving the effect of sounding like a member of the Chipmunks. To avoid this Chip munk effect, we recommend using either 22Khz or 44Khz in your mp3 media.

Values other than these noted may result in media files that are not compatible with web flash players."

Do you know what I should do?

You should be fine. The only thing that could be done is to change the .mp3 sample rate to 44khz. I have listened to the previous episodes and I could not hear any quality issues. You might start hearing some of the quality issues if music starts being added to the podcast. It would be good to up the quality anyway unless you need to keep a low bitrate for bandwidth reasons.

Thanks Josiah. Also, I didn't fill in the itunes info this round, and I'm not an itunes user. Do you recommend I use the written description (minus the links) from the main body of the post again under "itunes summary"? And what do you think would be a good "itunes subtitle," such as for podcast 108, listener questions and starting from scratch?

The written description is fine to use as the iTunes summary. You don't even have to remove the links because it will take them out for you as long as you are pasting in the "visual" written description. If you copy in the html it will show the html code on iTunes. So I would just switch to "visual" in the description, copy the content, and paste it into the iTunes summary.
I noticed you typed in the "Length" of the podcast into the description. You don't have to do that anymore because powerpress will put it into the post for you.

A good title would be "108 - Listener Questions and Starting from Scratch". I will run seo statistics on the title and may change it later but for now that is good. Even if I change the title later it won't change the link so you can still use the link anywhere you like. Right now I am going through and updating all of the podcast titles. After I am done with that I will be going through and checking the SEO on all of the titles, descriptions, keywords and tags.

Just so you know how the iTunes summary thing works. If you leave the iTunes summary blank it will use the content in the post. So you only have up put text into iTunes summary if you want different text showing up on itunes. Otherwise it will just default to using the description you already created for the post.

If you want, you can go through and make sure all of the podcasts have a title formated like I mentioned before: "108 - Listener Questions and Starting from Scratch" so if you went to look at "podcast 047 gaias garden chapter 5" it should be named "047 - Gaias Garden Chapter 5".

I don't know how much time you want to put into the descriptions of each podcast but the more information in the description of each podcast the better.

Meta Keywords:

Right now there are no meta keywords on any of the podcasts. I will be going through and finding the best keywords to manually enter in for each podcast. Until I can get through all of the podcasts and update this information I have set the default meta keywords to be "tags". This means that the meta keywords will be whatever the tags are for each of the podcasts until I can get to them all. This is better than not having any keywords at all.

I noticed you capitalized the words in version 2. Does this matter as I go through and edit? I know Paul is generally comfortable with the informal lower case.

The only reason I capitalize is to make it more noticeable in the google search results. If Paul likes everything lower case I can go through and change them back.

Well. I am looking at the feeds and this is what I am seeing:

http://www.richsoil.com/permaculture/feed/ - Shows the new episode.
http://www.richsoil.com/permaculture/podcast/ - Shows the new episode.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/PaulWheatonPermaculture - Does not show the new episode. (This is what iTunes reads)

So we need to know why feedburner isnt showing the latest episode. Suzy do you have access to feedburner? I am curious what feed feedburner is reading from.

Hmm... well maybe feedburner is having issues. I will do some testing on one of my other sites to see if feedburner is pushing the new episodes to iTunes on them. Other than that all we can do is wait for Paul to check feedburner to make sure the originating feed still is properly in place on feedburner.

The size of the feed is currently a little over 100k. And feedburner says it can take up to 512k. So the size is not the current problem. I think feedburner has simply gone stupid.

I think the only possible downside is that you used to be able to immediately start playing a podcast from the home page.

Other than that, I think it looks damn sharp!

Huge thank you to those working "in the back end" of things to make front end users like me - well- happy using the front end! I like the podcast imbedded the way it is at richsoil.com - it is very easy to find! I also use itunes and have not had as much success there, but will keep trying.

Is there a way to use the download option from the imbedded podcast to get the file to my itunes so I can put it on the ipod and listen while I slave away at my day job?
Thanks again!

Hi Amy,

Yes you can! Once you have the file downloaded, open iTunes and goto the podcast. Then just drag the mp3 file you downloaded into the permaculture podcast window. Then iTunes treats it like all of the other episodes.

* New Social Feature *

We now have a new social feature on each podcast. Now you can share the podcast on hundreds of social networks! Let's get the word out people.

Click on one of the podcasts and you will see "like" buttons on the top of the podcast and "share" buttons on the bottom.

Hopefully this will make it much easier for you to let people know about Paul Wheaton and his many endeavors to conquer the world one hugelculture bed at a time.

Added - Every podcast now has a reddit submit/upvote!

Added - Videos. I saw someone added a "video" tab to the navigation menu and there was a out dated youtube video plugin installed, so I decided to do something about it. I removed the outdated youtube plugin and now if you goto videos on the navigation bar it will load a page that has all of Paul Wheatons YouTube videos on it. Any time he uploads a new one to YouTube it will automatically be added to this page. If you click on a video you will notice that it does not open to YouTube but simply opens the video right on the page.

Moved - I moved the navigation bar below the header image. I did this for a cool feature that I will be adding in the future. I can't add it now because of some issues the server is having with image cacheing. It breaks the feature I want to add

Title Changes - Suzy was AWESOME and went through all of the titles to make them shorter and more noticeable on search engins. I think they look great. Thank you Suzy!

Changed - I changed the home button on the navigation menu to say WOFATI instead of Permaculture Podcasts. The reason I did this was because WOFATI's are the ultimate home for one and second because I want the home page to include more than just podcasts in the future. There is already a podcasts button on the navigation menu that shows all of the podcasts. Please let me know if I broke the rules on this change

That is all for tonight. More to come...

Can the gray be a darker gray - or maybe a color? When I first saw it I thought "this is grayed out - so it must not be working quite yet"

So .... much .... stuff ....

Very cool. I'm stunned!

feedburner still does not have podcast 108. Which means it still did not wind its way to itunes.

Looking at feedburner right now. There are 846 people set up as subscribers to feedburner. I suppose one of those is itunes.

Feedburner gets info from http://www.richsoil.com/permaculture/feed/ - when I open that, I see 108. When I fiew page info, I see that the whole page is 112k - well below the feedburner 512k limit.

I run the diagnostic test at feedburner and get this: "Your Ping resulted in an Error "We were unable to process your ping. You must ping with a URL that exactly matches the channel link (RSS) or alternate link (Atom) in your top level feed element pointing back to your website (e.g http://myblog.blogspot.com/), or use your feed URL (e.g. http://feeds.feedburner.com/myuri).""

I'm baffled.

Good heavens! What have you done! Here, try to fix it with this tiny ad:
