which are stonger? more envirometally friendly? least expensive? the trusses sure seem alot easier.

well, I guess we will be going with trusses, for strength and ease of building. trucking shouldn't be too bad because the manufacturer is just a few miles away. Trusses to cover a 24'x36' building will be $1,100 delivered.

Trusses actually do use less lumber and they provide clear, open spans where you can lay out almost any floor plan.

The down side is getting trusses up onto the walls. You need a crane or boom truck to get into the site or you have to make a Gin Pole or other type of lifting device, where as if you're making you own rafters and floor joists, you get the pieces up there one at a time.

You can make your own trusses too but that takes some time and making them yourself isn't as accurate as buying them from a shop that specializes in producing them and it's hard to get them lifted into place without making a lift of some kind.

Thanks for the input. Looks like an old buddy that builds for a living is going to help us out on supplies and equipment.

score!!! going to pickup 15 trusses that I saw on craigslist. talked the them down to 400$. They are exactly the size we need the guy just changed his mind about the project and didn't use the ones he ordered. Now the scary part..... getting them home. We have 16' trailer but the trusses are 28' long. I plan on building a temporary frame to hold them upright (actually upside down) on the trip home. eekkkk.

They are here safe and sound. we place them on a pitched side on the trailer and ratcheted them together. A little scary and we had some near misses on height while driving under power lines. All in all it went pretty smooth. Now I am halfway to getting a metal roof that i can collect rainwater from. yipee!!!

oh, how I wish they were going for a barn

but hubby needs a bigger garage so he can have all his toys...er I mean "demo equipment". hmmm is a lift really neccesary?

Ask around and see if anyone you know happens to know anyone who is in the logging business. Some of the guys (esp independents) have their own boom truck, and wouldn't mind making a few extra bucks hoisting your trusses onto the walls.

All lined up already. A friend who builds for a living is going to send his guys over to do the foundation, posts and set the trusses for us at cost. He has a boom truck or a forklift to do it. He even personallly went to the county for us to get the permit. We want it closer to the property lines then is usually permitted. He seems to think he might get them to pass it but he did ask for a little extra cash.......

I put a 30X60 room addition on my house and stick built my own trusses in place incorporating a center ridge pole. All out of 2X6's and plywood gussets really simple and lots of money saved doing it yourself. The 30' width alowed the use of 16' lumber with no waste.
