pigs and chestnuts, a beautiful combination?

i ran across this website and an article on pigs that forage on chestnuts.

what does everyone think of this. specially paul since hes done the free range pig thing.

it is a good supplement, but I would let them have access to lots of different things, as chestnuts alone won't have the protein or vitamins and minerals tat pigs require.

There are many tree crops like this.  Acorns, Mesquite beans, Mulberry leaves, fallen fruit, etc, can all be art of the pig's diet.

no where did i say that pigs should only eat chestnuts. i don't think the article says that either.

diversity is king as always.

i was hoping this would help people to stop buying feed.

no, of course not, but some people will look at that and think, "oh I can feed them chestnuts!"

When, in reality, you feed them tons of other things and chestnuts are more of a snack/supplement.

It can definitely help people reduce the amount of purchased feed.

Currently brainstorming a "complete" east coast us food forest for pigs

My current feed set up is pastures in the spring and summer. Then as the summer is ending the pears/apples start dropping and drop all the way to the winter. About mid way through the pear/apple drop the nut trees drop their acorns and Chinese chestnuts.
Plus they eat any other little critters they manage to root up too.

That is just a little bit of what they eat. They are free foraging so they eat plenty of other things they find too. Kudzu, any new growth, and they love with a passion anything about 6 inches on the other side of the fence

We pasture, no commercial feeds, and some of that pasture includes beach and one of the chestnut species. The pigs love the nuts. It is one of the many good things the land provides to make delicious pork.
