Supposedly there is a type of cassava developed in Africa that can produce a crop in around three months, but it has not been imported into the USA. I'm not sure why not or the legal side of this, but any tips on how to get that cultivar of cassava to my garden in the USA?

In my initial enthusiasm for permaculture, I just knew I had to grow all the wonderful stuff that Gregg Lawton has. He presents so well!

But my climate will not support subtropical plants. Several years ago Yuca was one of these miracle foods that I tried to chase down. The varieties I fond at that point required 8-10 months in the ground to mature though.

Do you have the name of this variety? Or perhaps where you heard of it? With these answers, someone may be able to help you better than I have.

Not sure of the variety. The cassava section of Eric Toensmeier's book called Perennial Vegetables is where I read of it.

The process of legally importing plant matter into the USA is crazy hard and expensive.  I am in Africa but have never heard of any 3 month cultivar.  My variety, which I just got from local villagers, takes a full year.  If you wrangle up more info, I'd be really interested.  I think I remember reading that there was an improved variety developed here for the coast which grows faster and more prolifically than our Western province variety, but I think it still takes 6-9 months.
