Read a small article in Farm Show, vol 34, no 2 on a sensor-controlled chicken door these two guys invented. They were tired of forgetting to close the chicken door at night and wildlife getting their chickens. The door is sturdy, and can be set to open/close at the same time every day, and modified in order to close it during a storm or something. All you have to do if you order one is cut an 11x15" hole in the wall and attach with screws. It goes for $180. Teir website, chickendoors.com has a youtube on using it.

we have an automatic door. the biggest problem was going out in the rain and snow in the winter. or when we had storms and such.

another benefit is they get our earlier in the morning this way.

now both me and the chickens are happier.

I made a review for an automatic chicken coop door here and highly recommend the ADORSTORE built doors. They are built robustly to last, but simply enough to tinker with. They run off a lantern battery and with a little creativity you can setup a solar charging system that would work.
