I just finished a round of cephalexin. Any thoughts on getting my digestive bacteria on the road to recovery?

I'd like to suggest Kefir! It's one of several ferments anyone can make at home that are packed full of probiotics, and there are already several helpful threads here on Permies all about Kefir:

Thanks James.  I'll give it a try.  I'm going to start a batch of sauerkraut as well.  I guess any fermented food will help?

Some brands of yogurt advertise they are high in probiotics (can't recall which brand but Jaimie Lee Curtis made commercials for it claiming it was a remedy IBS or something). Not sure if they add extra probiotics but that would be one quick and easy way to replenish your system.

I love yogurt, I just didn't know if commercial yogurt actually contains the probiotics they claim,  or if it's just advertising hype.  I'm willing to risk it  :)

You can also buy probiotics in a powder or pill form and they probably contain more types of flora. I would think the ones that have to be refrigerated are the best.

Looking into this, aged cheese is also a good source of probiotics.  I had been wondering if my homemade blue cheese dressing would.
Between the blue cheese, sour cream, and kefir; I think it does. Just as a side note, most salad dressing recipes start with half sour cream half mayonnaise and then you add the flavors with herbs, spices, cheese... I think real sour cream is also probiotic
So it might even be a way to sneak some probiotic food into the unsuspecting. 😉

Something else that doesn't get talked about as much is the prebiotics.  That is foods with high amounts of fiber that the bacteria break down. If you are eating a healthy diet  with lots of fruits and vegetables you are probably already doing this naturally. Most root vegetables,  apples, bananas, and oats always seem to feature on lists of these foods. It's a great way to nurture the survivors.  You could even pair probiotic dressings with veggies.

Edit: https://drjockers.com/top-33-prebiotic-foods/ this is a great article explaining prebiotics.   The list is a chart in the article.   Good news, dark chocolate and honey are prebiotics.
