SkIP: develop the Skills to Inherit Property

This is my idea this morning.  I think it might help bring clarity to all the PEP stuff.  

The general idea is that all the PEX and PEP stuff would fall under the SkIP umbrella:

SkIP
  - something
  - something else
  - PEX
        o PEN
        o PEG
        o PEP


SkIP: develop the Skills to Inherit Property

Skip college
Skip the rat race
Skip the mortgage and debts
Retire in your 20s


People go to college to be able to enter the professional workforce.  The goal is that after 40 years of working they will be debt free, own a home and have enough set aside to carry them through retirement.   For a lot of people, that retirement package includes a few acres in the country.  

There is a shortcut.  

There are millions of people that have good land, with a house or two, a good tractor and truck, and they wish to will their land to somebody worthy.  All you need to do is build the right skills that demonstrate that you are worthy.

So there can be lots of ways to SkIP, and PEP is just one of those ways.  

I am thinking it could be wise to rename this forum to "skip / pex / pep" -- what do you all think?

If your inclined to make money the internet makes a lot of things possible that were not so 2 or 3 decades ago in the age of rotary dial phones

I'm excited about this because I hope to will my land to a permie one day!

What if SkIP was the heading for a whole section of the forum (like Growies or Building).  Then under it could be:
PEX - threads and general information about the Permaculture Experience according to X
PEP - All the PEP badges and BBs
Otis dating site - Place for folks with land to will or share to meet up with aspiring permies (may need to >3 badges to post unless you're the landowner?)
Headings for other ways to skip the rat race:
  ERE - Early Retirement Extreme
 

A sub category might include soft skills:

Starter suggestions:
- listening actively
- echo technique for confirming instructions / expectations
- project / timeline management
- dealing respectfully with conflict
- multi generational cross cultural awareness
- legal structure

Actually, looking back through this it might be good if someone started an arbitration type group to assist with these relationships and ensure a higher win/win/win rate.

I think that ERE is a strategy that is an alternative to SkIP.  So ERE wouldn't go in the skip category.  

I do think that six to twelve months from now it might be wise to create a skip category and there could be a bunch of subforums like you suggest.   As is I think that the current forum could use some division.  

Maybe, with enough activity, there would be a forum for each aspect?  And then a forum for discussion forming PEP.  And another forum for people just getting started with PEP.  Maybe another with properties that will host PEP.  And another for PEP events?

I think that we need to get more people to share that they would value PEP.   More stories.  More scenarios.   All in a thread so that people can see it and value it.   We know that the workforce has professional jobs for people that have have a college degree and some experience.  We need to show people that this whole inheriting land thing is a real thing.  

Then we get people working on PEP4.   And when they are a year away from being PEP4 certified, and it looks like there could be a future relationship between the two parties - THEN is a good time to start hammering out some formal documentations and some arbitration facilities.

Sounds like a plan!

As an older lady I’ve been down the rat race road and that’s not where I want to be.

I’ve discovered Permies!!!

I’ve always wanted to learn how to live on a homestead and get my own land!

This is my dream!!

I encourage you do do that! I think the more people see PEP being done, the more people will see PEP as "doable."

Welcome Melissa!  Sure, people would likely love to see your blog.  And/or you can just post on Permies

Melissa I know exactly how you feel! I to feel as though I have found my dream come true! A lifelong dream prayer is being answered with permies! So far everyone I have told of my adventure in coming to Montana and entering boot camp has been a fantastic response! I have been telling people about the passive greenhouse! And I'm preparing myself in learning more about horizontal beekeeping I want to hit the ground running! I'm very excited about starting boot camp! Can't wait!

Do you already have examples of successful SkIPper's?

You bet!  The software doesn't track this for us (yet) but there are dozens of PEPpers who have earned badges and probably getting close to 100 PEPpers who have earned a BB (Badge Bit).  One particularly bright PEPper is a few badges away from PEP1 certification.  

Every one of those BBs proves the growth of that person's skills.  Once they've proven themselves enough, they may just find themselves in a happy relationship with someone who doesn't have an heir for their homestead.  

The program is new but it's looking pretty sweet.

Montana? I thought it was just in California? o.0 What did I miss?

Wheaton Labs is in Montana.  Not sure what got you thinking of California...

This gives me hope! I was thinking there surely wouldn't be anyone in Central Texas wanting to do something like this... but if there is you there must be more, right?

I've just started my journey and have quite a ways to go, but I'm also only 25 so I don't feel too behind! Shoot, I've been able to keep a child alive for almost 2 years now so I'd say I'm ahead of most 25 year olds! Hah.

I'm glad you're hopeful!  25 seems incredibly young to me - I didn't start getting seriously into permaculture until around age 40, and I didn't have much of a clue how to proceed.
