I have a few spots in my forest garden that are well shaded by large pin cherry trees. I would like to try growing some medicinal herbs in these spots this upcoming spring.
Wondering if anyone has any reccomendations and success for this scenario in zone 6b?
My experience is in zone 5 (have grown in both a and b). Good shade medicinals are:
Black cohosh
Blue cohosh
Goldenseal
Ginseng
Sweet woodruff
Lemon balm (highly invasive — be ready to harvest massive amounts to keep it under control - I feed liberal amounts to my chickens)
Angelica archangelica it grows in the forest. Horse radish grows in half shade. Valerian doesn’t mind shade and wet feet. Chives is worth a try. But most like sun better. You’ve got nothing where sun is? People fill whole walls with pots and watering systems.
Creating edible biodiversity and embracing everlasting abundance.
Yes, I've got some edge in the forest garden where I will plant some other herbs. This other spot in question that I'm referring to has nice potential as it's definitely semi-shade, but does get some afternoon sun. I think I will experiment this spring with everyones recommendations, thank you for those!
Lemon Balm
Wild Passionfruit (Maypop)
Various true mints
Oregon Grape
Bee balm where I live is found a lot in the shade of black walnut trees.
Also I have seen where when the soil is satisfied (Not over-absorbing the composted material) some plants deemed full sun will survive and in some cases do well in the shade.
