Happy giving Tuesday!

Today is called Giving Tuesday. It's a day for donating and giving back. It falls on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year since 2012. I made a donation to Wikipedia.org. I use it often, and have learned a lot from it so I thought it would be nice to help them out.

Oh yeah, the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving this year falls on December 3rd, which is also National Apple Pie day....

This kind of drives me mad. I get the point of it, but it just seems people go above and beyond this time of year. That is swell, especially for the kids who will not have much of a Christmas, but what about the rest of the year?

I hesitate to say this because it seems like I am boasting, but that is not it at all. Katie and I give to people ALL year. It might be a simple paying of someone's food at a restaurant, but in JUNE. And a family at church has a son who is going through cancer, the treatments are all year, not just during the Christmas Season so we give all year so they can have gas money to go see the child during chemotherapy. On the day our baby died, we stopped at a restaurant and the waitress had just had her first Grandchild but was upset she could not fly out and see it. Just because we had a devastating loss does not mean we could not celebrate in another child's birth, so we tipped her well so she could buy something special for her new Grandson.

We live in a hurting world, and people need help all year long, why limit giving to only one day?

I agree with you both -

for those who never give regularly, maybe the official "day" gives them that little extra social "nudge" to be generous and loving to their community in need - that's a good outcome!

For those who regularly give, or are prone to be generous, spreading it out across the year helps far more than concentrating it to one season. (one month of feast and eleven months of famine doesn't help as much as 12 months of "adequate").

It's not just Giving Tuesday and National Apple Pie Day, it is also apparently National Roof Over Your Head Day, and National Trick Shot Day.
