I received an email that said that today is National Pie Day!

National Day Calender said, "Each year on December 1st, dessert lovers across the United States enjoy a slice of their favorite on National Pie Day. Pie is so delicious we celebrate it twice a year. The more popular date is January 23rd

I'm kind of surprised Pie Day isn't on the same day as Pi Day (March 14th or 3.14). Seems like whoever set Pie Day missed out on a great mathematics/baking crossover opportunity.

Now you've got me hungry for blackberry pie. Or mulberry. And that's a shame because I didn't freeze enough mulberries last summer. And store-boughten blackberry pie? It's enough to make your Gramma wanna shoot ya for even mentioning it.

There are other kinds of pies besides berry pies.

Apple, peach, and pear to start off with.

Then there are custard-type pies like lemon, chocolate, and coconut with sky-high meringue.

I will end this with buttermilk and chess pies.

Are there some I have forgotten?

I was surprised that both pie days are in the cold months. Wouldn't it make more sense to celebrate pie when there is fresh fruit? But then I remembered that you may can your pie filling. My wife did that last summer so that we can enjoy prune pies during the winter. She made a pie for Christmas and it was delicious.

My area was known for growing Italian Prunes in the early part of the 1900s. They are a kind of plum and taste very good. They are less popular these days but there are still a ton of prune trees around.

I like being able to celebrate lots of Pie Days though it gets a little confusing with so many pie days.

We might have missed the one on Dec 1st:

Each year on December 1st, dessert lovers across the United States enjoy a slice of their favorite on National Pie Day. Pie is so delicious we celebrate it twice a year. The more popular date is January 23rd.

https://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/national-day/national-pie-day-december-1

We still have a chance for National Pizza Pie on Feb 9, 2024.

And then:

Pi Day is observed on March 14 (the 3rd month) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant figures of pi.

I have to admit that I love pie. My favorite is chess pie. A little goes a long way!
