I'm new to rocket stove technology but I can't find a post about cookers from earlier than 5 years ago!
When I was young, I carried my household on my back. Now that I'm a Crone, I'm considering an old-time Bow Top Wagon pulled by a couple of donkeys or a cob. I would like to have something with the capacity of my old 'white gas' camping stove which doesn't use fossil fuels.  Sounds like a rocket cooker would fit the bill.  How do I start as a rank beginner at this?

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for starting this thread, Freyda. Are you planning on using the stove inside your bow top wagon or outside? Are you trying to heat your wagon or just your food? If you are having your wagon pulled by a donkey or cow, are you interested in using their waste fuel? Out here, the bow-top is called a shepherd's wagon. I look forward to learning more about portable rocket cooker ideas and mini-stoves from the experts.

On the gadget side of things, there are portable wood-burning camping stoves that use an internal fan to make a hot, clean burn. There have been versions of these around for decades. The current iteration is the BioLite CampStove 2+. People seem to really like them. I can't speak to their lifespan though.

Freyda, I am fascinated with rocket stoves too so I love reading about them.

I am assuming that what you want would be small enough not to take up to much space while traveling and be easy to take in and out of the wagon.

My guess would be that what you want is a mini or a micro rocket stove.

Here are some informative threads that I found, one is from 8 years ago:

https://permies.com/t/22620/Hybrid-rocket-stove-tiny-trailer

This one is about making one from tin cans so it is small:

I am looking forward to hearing from our experts.

Thanks Amy! Your questions are perfect for helping me focus on the actual details I need to consider before even knowing what to look for in a stove. Since all of this is in the planning stage (as well as testing feasibility) you started me off on the right foot planning-wise.

> I want something that I can use both inside the wagon and outside when stopped somewhere I want to spread out. And I would ideally like it to be able to cook simple "camp meals" (one pot) as well as bake, if possible.

> I would love to be able to heat the wagon with the stove as well. I live in the NE and it is already going down to 20 deg F at night. I wouldn't necessarily travel in the depths of Winter but I know there are even colder places than here.

> As I consider manure a valuable resource of fertility for the Earth, I don't want to use it for fuel. Scattered twigs and branches would be plenty for my needs. I'm a small person and don't need to eat much, and I don't want to have to wait for it to dry in my wagon in the wetter climes.

And thanks for the nomenclature lesson. I would love to find out more about Shepherd's wagons and how people have built and arranged them.  I'm wondering if there is a forum on tiny traveling houses here.  It is certainly a fitting subject for permies!

Check out my replies to other replies in which I expand on the thoughts/realizations that your questions brought to mind.

Again, thanks so much for engaging with me on my search,

Freyda

Thanks for the suggestions Douglas.

Checking out the links, I can say that this is really too high-tech for my tastes, as well as way too pricey for what it is.  However, it caused me to do more searching and research on what is out there. More about that below.

Hi Anne,
Thanks for helping me out with relevant links! I never seem to be able to word searches in a way that brings them up.

"I am assuming that what you want would be small enough not to take up to much space while traveling and be easy to take in and out of the wagon."
     Yes

"My guess would be that what you want is a mini or a micro rocket stove."
Actually, that is what I thought at first but, after a lot of research on websites that sell prefab ones, I saw that the flames that come out the feed tray are way too dangerous for inside a wagon!

Here are some informative threads that I found, one is from 8 years ago:

https://permies.com/t/22620/Hybrid-rocket-stove-tiny-trailer
This one is way too big for a wagon. More like a RMH with a 5 gal stack!

"This one is about making one from tin cans so it is small:"

https://permies.com/t/115433/Build-Mini-Rocketstove-Tin-Cans
This is an awesome infographic!  Even though it won't be right for the wagon, I am finally encouraged to try building one for use around the homestead outdoors. It would be great not to have to go inside and use a propane stove just to make tea!  Thanks!

https://permies.com/t/131152/micro-mini-small-propane-canister
This thread is a good example of the kind of discussions that leave me scratching my head! Way out there on technical stuff. Copper coils and heating water? I need more than tutorials for this kind of thing!

https://permies.com/t/151006/Rocket-stove-perfect-tiny-house
This thread is very interesting and has many links to manufactured stoves.  Only one, however, is the efficient double-burn design. It's also made in the US and looks amazing but is Waaaay too expensive! It looks more appropriate to a permanent dwelling as well.  I'm disappointed to see that, even though it was posted a year ago, there doesn't look to be any more action on the thread. Too bad.  Maybe I'll invite him to this thread.

And now here is a stove made in the US that I think would be perfect...and it won't break the bank! The maker has a lot to say about build (and the inferiority of others') as well as some great videos. That's where I learned about the flame path on Rocket stoves. He has three others as well.

This is a little off rocket topic but check out this wonderful 7min video on the interior of the traditional shepherd's wagon, including old-time stove detail.

Have fun Freyda!

Freyda, I linked to that first article mostly for the discussion.  I didn't even see that stove with that tall pipe.  To me for outside that is unnecessary.

It seems to be this might call for two stoves, one inside and one outside.  My reasoning is trying to take it apart to go outside then putting it back together to put it back in the wagon.

We used to do a lot of camping in a popup trailer and since ours were small we did a lot of experiments like cooking biscuits in pie pans on a camp stove.

I also feel a person doing this will have to think "outside the box".

Has anyone created a portable stove from an empty ammo canister?
Looking for ideas to share with Ukrainian soldiers. Plenty of empty ammo boxes. Plenty of building rubble.
Creating info in English, getting translations done, distributing digitally right now.
Returning to Ukraine mid-December (earliest I can get back in)
Need simple ideas a talented amateur can put together themselves.
Video & photos - minimal words best, given language barriers.

I plan to share these two:

Ammo Can Rocket Stove! - Welding A Portable Camping Stove
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zg-4viTrBkQ

Would like opinions on how good these are. Looking for simplicity with limited tools  (what a military unit would normally have).
Heating, as well as cooking, is needed.

First full RMH systems (and small reference to portables) is on my website:

Thanks for any thoughts!
